How to build your own longboard?

Prepare the Plywood

Cut two sheets from your plywood with the width of your desired deck plus a little extra for wiggle room. Ensure that you cut in the direction of the grain on the outer veneers.

Cut the sheets to the desired length of your deck, leaving some extra room for adjustments.

Preparing the plywood

Create the Deck’s Curvature

  • Lay down the two outer strips of wood on your work surface.
  • Place the first sheet of plywood on top of the strips, making sure the edges are supported and aligned.
  • Apply a generous amount of Titebond III wood glue on the first sheet and spread it evenly.
  • Lay the second sheet of plywood on top of the first.
  • Place the third plank of wood down the center of the sheets and clamp it down to create concave and/or rocker or camber.
  • Wait for at least 24 hours for the glue to dry and the curves to set in place.

Shape the Deck

  • Remove the clamps and admire your curved deck blank.
  • Find and mark the center of your nose and tail, then draw a center line.
  • Create a template of your desired board shape using paper, and draw the shape onto the plywood.
  • Cut out the shape using your preferred cutting tool.
  • Refine and shape the edges of the board using a router, file, or sandpaper.
